Helping the blind
KARACHI: A person who cannot see still, fortunately, is capable of studying and completing an education. Blind people in our country say “yes” to life and direly want to express themselves in positive ways but the system kills their desires and directs them to go only one way.
The system never lets them to use their creative minds. When it comes to taking exams, these innocent people are asked to take a writer with them. The blind person dictates to the assistant who writes for him or her. This is a form of discrimination wherein blind persons are not even allowed to take their own exams, making them dependent and robbing them of building up their self-esteem.
To the administration of our educational system and Government of Pakistan, I am directing your attention towards accessible technology and Braille writing. Visually independent people can use computers properly by listening. It would be great if you allow them to bring their laptops to examination centres to take their own exams. This would give them satisfaction in the grades they earn.
Beyond education, there are many visually impaired seeking jobs, who are extremely well educated and know Braille very well. It is recommended they are given jobs to check Braille answers sheets in exams and other administrative tasks. This would promote Braille education and make blind students feel independent.
I request the authorities concerned and the government to take initiatives to honour blind people and facilitate them in displaying their talents and hence, excelling in life. We, as blind persons, do not need your charity; we are asking for opportunities to allow our skills to be expressed.
