LAHORE - Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) has demanded Punjab government to coup with the shortage of teachers for improvement in education sector in province.

They demanded immediate hiring of teachers across the province. General Secretary PTU Rana Liaqat Ali said that, Punjab government should also show some seriousness in this regard rather than believing on reports of all is well.

He was of the view that there massive shortage of teachers in province which is affecting learning of students around 175,000. If government would hire more than 35000 teachers immediately, then it can coup with the learning damage of the students, he added.

Liaqat further revealed that due to this low student teacher ratio, schools are not performing as per government’s expectation, therefore government is blaming teachers for this poor performance rather than improving its own system. He also observed that on the one hand, Punjab government is campaigning for 100 percent admission but, there is low number of teachers in school, even there are several schools which are being administered by one or two teachers.

It seems that government is deliberately not coping with shortage of teachers as it wants to hand over those schools to NGOs and Punjab Education Foundation (PEF), he added.

PTU General Secretary also demanded Chief Minster Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and Secretary Schools Education Department (SED) to take notice of the shortage of teachers in province and took immediate action.

Until, the government couldn’t hire the teacher, it should hire teachers on daily wages which could overcome the shortage of teachers, he further said
