Islamabad—National Testing Service Pakistan (NTS) is an organization in Pakistan that administers academic performance evaluation tests. It is similar to Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the United States. NTS, being Pakistan’s first and selfsustained premier testing organization. NTS conducts tests and assessments for admissions, scholarships, and recruitment and promotion purposes. It is governed by a Board of Governors of NTS.
NTS offers two main types of tests, the National Aptitude Test (NAT) and the Graduate Assessment Test (GAT). NAT is aimed at students seeking admission to colleges and universities. GAT is aimed at graduates seeking admission to postgraduate education. NTS exams are also used to determine qualifications of students seeking advanced study abroad. NTS is a Member of the International Association for Educational Assessment; USA (IAEA). It is also recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC).
The NTS was developed to ensure quality educational standards in Pakistan and to “provide a national scale for comparative grading between institutes”, consolidating examination boards under one administrating body.
According to Shahid Siddiqui, director of The Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Lahore School of Economics, tests implemented prior to the development of the NTS were criticized as not accommodating sociocultural differences, resulting in a need for “an indigenous testing service that should design and develop testing materials within an indigenous context”.
Prominent Pakistani institutions like COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) and Center for Advanced Studies in Engineering (CASE) have made it compulsory for students seeking admission to have cleared tests conducted by NTS.
National Testing Service – Pakistan (NTS) was established in July 2002 in response to an expressed need for a testing service in the National Education Policy (19982010) and the Information Technology (IT) Policy of Government of Pakistan (GOP).
Having completed Thirteen (13) successful years, NTS is now playing a pivotal role in promoting merit and quality education at college and university level. Following its core values, NTS always strives for excellence and ensures quality, efficiency, reliability, accuracy and most significantly credibility of entire system in a transparent manner under strict security arrangements.NTS tests and assessment are now prerequisite of many prime public and private sector engineering, medical and other colleges, universities and institutions for admission and recruitment.

The main objectives of NTS are included to conduct efficient, transparent and international standards tests in order to assess the competency of candidates for admission, scholarship and recruitment purposes, undertake research on educational, professional and testing systems to identify the prevailing academic and operational gaps in the systems, building capacities of the educational and professional individuals and institutions by professional certification through testing and assessment and producing and disseminate information and research on education and professional development standards.
NTS Vision2020 prime focus will remain services for educational institutions, government, corporate, private industry and professions and also the HR organizations. However, international standards test and assessment products and services will be offered on the patterns of TOEFL, TOEIC, SAT (I and II), ACT, GRE (Gen and Subject), GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, Work FORCE Assessment For Job Fit, etc. While keeping in view local requirements, conditions/environment and education system of the country. NTS aims to administer CBT all over the country through LAN/WAN setup of educational institutions with centrally developed/controlled software but under strict security.
