PESHAWAR: At least 108 students received their Associate Degree in Education (ADE), through a programme sponsored by USAID, stated a press release issued by the organisation on Thursday.

A ceremony was held at a local hotel, in which more than 3,100 scholarships were awarded to aspiring teachers across Pakistan under the USAID’s Pakistan Reading Project. Around 950 of the recipients hail from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa while over 100 are from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

“The United States is pleased to collaborate with the government to make quality education accessible to all,” the statement quoted US Consul General in Peshawar William Martin as saying in his message to the recipients.

He said he is hopeful the recipients would serve as role models for future generations.

“USAID’s Pakistan Reading Project is supplementing K-P government’s efforts by strengthening ADE and bachelors of education programme and reviving the culture of reading [in the region],” said Abdul Munim, provincial minister for tourism. “Trained teachers are an essential element for the development and prosperity of not only K-P but the entire country. I am glad to see [such] bright young people [who are eager] to reform and develop our society,” Munim added.
