Sony KOOV: programmed toys for learning
TOKYO: Sony unveiled KOOV, its first product under the Global Education programme set to work around three program elements; Think, Make and Feel. Koov offers a unique play and learn experience through under their element Make.
Koov is robot building educational kit made up of blocks and a microcontroller is how Sony describes its educational solution focused on teaching robots and programming. The concept video doesn’t reveal much about the end product but the kit comes with it’s own smart device to go with the lego styled building blocks.
Sony is now extending the digital learning solutions that began with Lego Mindstorms and Lego’s WeDo 2.0 kits. The name KOOV is based on basic binary programming 1 and 0 mixed up with < and > symbols used in programming syntax.
Building blocks once assembled can be controlled as a robot and the kit contains seven different translucent blocks. Controls are coding based which, from what the video reveals, comes in a visual format and some basic programming logic. Another KOOV video reveals some of the possible outcomes in a play, code and create learning environment.
Sony collaborated with Japan’s top educational material producer Artec Co for KOOV, set to release in Summer 2016.
