Work of 240 researchers showcased at DUHS

KARACHI: Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Department of Research organised a seminar to celebrate '7th Annual Research Day' followed by research poster competition on Saturday at Ojha Campus.

Renowned Scientist Prof Dr Attaur Rehman was the chief guest whereas DUHS Vice Chancellor Prof Masood Hameed Khan, Prof Masroor, Prof Junaid Ashraf, Dr Kashif Shafique, besides senior faculty members and students attended the seminar.

Aimed at showcasing the research in posters, the seminar serves as a forum for interaction among faculty members. A total of 323 research papers were submitted out of which 77.4 percent were accepted.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Attaur Rehman said that progress of the country lies in quality education, science and technology, innovation and entrepreneurship and a governance system that allows merit to prevail and offers quick and fair justice.

"Pakistan did make spectacular progress in higher education after the establishment of the Higher Education Commission in 2002, several of our universities were ranked in the top 600 of the world," he said, adding that since last few decades Pakistan has progressed a lot in field of sciences and education by increasing its budget in science and technology.

He said that there is need to provide platform to enhance research activities in developing countries. He stressed on universities to facilitate research work of their students and faculty members. He congratulated Prof Masood Hameed Khan and Research Department for regularly holding research activities.

Prof Masood Hameed Khan said that said that the motivation to observer faculty research day is to enhance the enthusiasm towards performance of quality researches. The purpose of research is the creation of knowledge. "Dow University is providing platform for research activities and it is the duty of young scientist to take it at highest level," he maintained. He appreciated the efforts of HEC for providing technical and financial support in the development work at the university.

Dr Kashif Shafique presented a brief overview of functions of Department of Research and procedures and policies being followed to conduct the research at DUHS. He highlighted that in year 2014, DUHS has observed the highest number of publications in the last 10 years.

More than 300 hundred abstracts were received, however, only 80 abstracts by the faculty members, and 160 from the post-graduate and undergraduate students were finally accepted for the poster competition.

A panel of judges evaluated the abstracts and screened them for final presentation at the 7thth Annual Research Day. Among the selected posters, top five were declared winners and these research papers from faculty and students were given the opportunity to present through an oral presentation on the event day.
