RAWALPINDI:
The Civil Lines police on Saturday told a magistrate that only the Anti-Corruption Department (ACD) could investigate a case regarding the fraudulent appointment of some 40 teachers.

Investigation officer SI Tanveer Hussain informed a duty magistrate that the case was to be investigated by ACD and produced a letter issued by the CPO stating that the police could not investigate as government functionaries were allegedly involved.

The duty magistrate granted two-day physical remand to five clerks arrested in connection with the fraudulent hiring of 40 teachers in Kallar Syedan. Police had arrested two of the clerks from the education department, two from the district accounts office, and one from the RBISE.

Civil Lines police registered the fraud case on the complaint of EDO Education Qazi Zahoorul Haq.Haq said a probe identified education department junior clerk Mohammad Riaz as the main culprit.

According to the FIR, others involved include employees of the education department, district accounts office, Holy Family Hospital and DHQ, a notary public and stamp paper vendor in Kallar Syedan, and the branch managers of five commercial banks.

Employment of the fake teachers has caused a loss of Rs5.44 million, it added. Aftab Satti, president of the clerks association, said false hiring could not occur without the connivance of senior education department officials.

Haq told The Express Tribune that his own signature had also been forged on the teachers’ appointment letters.
