The Punjab Education Department has started finalising the one teacher, one classroom policy in primary schools across the province including the Rawalpindi district to help ensure educational standards in government schools.

Under a proposal worked out in 2012, the education department aimed to focus on a policy of six teachers, six classrooms policy with a total enrolment of at least 200 students in each primary school.

Currently, over 1,400 primary schools are functioning in the Rawalpindi district with a total strength of 3,900 teachers. An official said that it becomes almost impossible for three teachers to engage six classes simultaneously and ultimately most classes end up being without a teacher. He said that most primary schools also have surplus teachers, who will be moved, transferred to other schools where they were needed.

The official said that to end this discrepancy, the education department has finalised the one teacher one classroom policy, which will be implemented from April. He said that new inductions will also be made to ensure that each school gets the required teaching staff.

Central Secretary General of Punjab Teacher association Farman Abbasi said that the association had suggested during a meeting with Education Secretary Rana Akhter to ensure that each primary school get the required strength of teachers. He said that the education secretary had appreciated their proposal with a promise to implement it, in letter and spirit.
