Aiming at education

LAHORE - Commemorative ceremonies, rallies and walk were organised in almost all the public and private educational institutions of the provincial capital to remember the martyrs of APS Peshawar and to show solidarity with their families.

The school was attacked by Taliban terrorists on 16 December 2014.
More than 140 people including about 132 children were killed before the SSG commandos stormed into the campus building and killed all seven attackers.

The University of Engineering and Technology Lahore organised a ceremony and walk, where Punjab Finance Minister Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha was the chief guest.
In her address, the minister said the sacrifice of martyrs of Peshawar united the entire nation against terrorism, extremism, sectarianism and intolerance.

“Every child of this nation is standing with the martyrs of Army Public School Peshawar and they are raising slogan that they have to establish peace and make Pakistan a developed country and promote education,” she said.

Vice Chancellor of the university, faculty members, teachers, research scholars and a large number of male and female students were present on the occasion.

“Youth are determined that they will not allow a repeat of Peshawar tragedy in our country,” said Dr Pasha, adding the military operation Zarb-e-Azb and National Action Plan was being forwarded successfully against terrorism.

“We have to march forward for rooting out the menace of terrorism.
We have to promote such education which should discourage attitudes like intolerance and extremism.

The provincial minister said that the nation has to remove all such material from the textbooks which is creating sectarianism.
She said more than 50 thousand people were killed in the war against terrorism so far, which also include our youth who had to improve national economy and play their role for eliminating poverty.
She stressed that youth are our future and need a safe future so that they could bring the country into the ranks of developed countries.

VC UET Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid, in his welcome address, thanked the chief guest for attending the ceremony and highlighting the role of Finance department in support of quality education.
All Deans of faculties, chairpersons, directors, faculty members and a large number of students participated in the walk and ceremony.

Earlier, the district administration blew sirens, set up at 75 places of the city for a minute silence by stopping traffic at all the signals at 10 am.

Meanwhile, different student organisations also took out rallies especially Insaaf Students Federation which had organised a rally at Main Boulevard Gulberg which was attended by scores of students.

In different functions arranged by public and private schools across the city, students and teachers paid tribute to the martyred students APS in their speeches, playing national anthem and national songs for showing solidarity with them and their parents.

On the 1st anniversary of barbaric attack on Army Public School Peshawar by enemies of humanity and Pakistan, Punjab University Academic Staff Association (ASA) President Dr Hassan Mobeen Alam and Secretary Dr Mahboob Hussain saluted the children and teachers of APS who lost their live at the hand of terrorists but united Pakistani nation against terrorists.
They prayed for the elevation of their souls.

The PU’s Directorate of Students Affairs will organise a mega event at Faisal Auditorium today (December 17, 2015) at 10am to pay tribute to Army Public School victims.
Later, PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran will lead a big rally organised by PU Academic Staff Association from Faisal Auditorium to VC office.
