‘Women in Pakistan more vulnerable to health problems’

ISLAMABAD: Women in Pakistan are more vulnerable to face health issues due to lack of awareness on nutrition value for them and women parliamentarians are more focussed on legislating on this issue, said MNA Romina Khurshid Alam.

She said that there is a dire need to keep women aware on their health issues especially if they are mothers. Female members of the parliament are working on legislation on nutrition value of women as it is considered as the need of hour.

She said “We have women representation on large scale in all the fields in Pakistan and they can participate in more activities if they have good health.

The women health issues need to be highlighted through various programmes for them and mainly the rural women to bring improvement in their health adding, “We are working with South Asian Physician Academy in this regard to launch some projects that could benefit the health of women.”

MNA Romina Khurshid Alam is also the member of various committees related to National Commission on Status of Women, Climate change, Women Education, Health and Non- Muslims Parliamentary Caucus.

“We have a high representation of women in our parliament comparatively to that of many developed countries and we are definitely focusing on women in making legislation to empower them in diverse field,” she added.

Women parliamentarians are all focused on working for women by giving them their due rights in terms of health, education, job opportunities and their empowerment. Parliamentarians are also focusing on women education that is ultimately connected to their empowerment in terms of getting better job opportunities, exploring their leadership skills, highlighting their own issues and equal rights for them.

Romina said that National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) is also playing its due role in examining policies, programmes and other measures taken by the government for women development and gender equality, review laws, rules and regulations affecting the status of women, monitor mechanisms and institutional procedures for redress of violations of women’s rights and individual grievances, encourage and sponsor research to generate information, analysis and studies relating to women and gender issues, develop and maintain interaction and dialogue with NGOs, experts and individuals in society at the national, regional and international level.

While Women Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) has its responsibility, which is properly being fulfilled as the members are active to participate in any activity that bring women in mainstream, she said.

Since the partition in 1947, the role of women’s struggle has been the most vital and indispensable in order to strengthen the parliamentary issues and matters. Due to countless efforts and strive of women, Pakistan has now become the dynamic and versatile platform to give the better picture of women’s role as the WPC has the women participation and engagement regarding all parliamentary discussions.
