Three Pakistanis shortlisted for Global Teacher Prize 2016

ISLAMABAD – Three Pakistani teachers have made the top 50 shortlisted nominations for the second annual Global Teacher Prize 2016.

Referred to as the Nobel Prize for teaching, the Global Teacher Prize is an annual one million dollar award that will be given to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession.

Entries for the award have been whittled down to a final 50 from 8,000 nominations and applications from 148 countries. In total, the long list contains candidates from 29 nations. The three teachers among the global top 50 include Humaira Bachal, Aqeela Asifi and Neelofar Ali.

According to a short bio posted on the Global Teacher Prize website, Humaira Bachal is an advocate for girls education in Pakistan and the first female in her family to be educated. She began teaching friends after school in the slums of Karachi since the age of twelve.

Aqeela Asifi has founded a school in the Kot Chandana refugee community of Pakistan, beginning in a borrowed tent. She serves as counselor to both refugee and local Pakistani children to enable and facilitate interaction and cross-cultural exchanges contributing to tolerance, social cohesion and peaceful co-existence among Afghan refugees.

Neelofar set up the first Montessori school in Gilgit Baltistan and thus introduced its Early Childhood Development model and stimulating teaching style to the region. From this list of 50 shortlisted teachers, a prize committee will announce the final 10 teachers in February 2016 with the winner being announced in March at the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai.
