The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) will jointly hold a national conference early next month to prepare a national policy on open distance learning (ODL) system, said a press release on Tuesday. “AIOU being the pioneer and first in Asia following this mode of education wishes to play a leading role in this connection,” said Vice Chancellor Professor Shahid Siddiqui while reviewing the arrangements of the conference. He said such a policy was needed since some other universities have also recently started distance learning programmes. Educationists from across the country and an expert on ODL from Canada have been invited to the conference. “The proposed policy will help in institutionalising the ODL and promote coordination and exchanges among institutions to ensure quality of education and facilitate the students,” the statement said.
