A large number of college students held a protest demonstration on Tuesday against the proposed return of the educational institution to a Christian education trust.

Hundreds of teachers and students of Gordon College Rawalpindi marched through the city chanting slogans against the government and education department for attempting to return the historical educational institution.

They demanded of the authorities to avoid any such step and warned that government would be responsible for law and order situation if the government went ahead with the proposed handing over of the college to a Christian Trust.

Traffic on Murree Road and other connecting roads remained suspended due to the protest rally and commuters had to face severe problems.

According to sources, a delegation of Christian minority community along with an American NGO, met a prominent personality in the province and demanded the return of the Christian educational institutions, including Gordon College that were nationalized in 1972-73. During the meeting, they were assured that these institutions would be returned to them. A committee was constituted for this purpose which would submit its recommendations to complete the process.

The land for the Gordon school, which was later upgraded to college in 1911, was donated by the forefathers of former federal minister Raja Shahid Zafar to the English rulers.
