Merit vs entry test
Tuesday, September 08, 2015 - A hot debate is going on among the social circles that whether merit or entrance test should be the criteria for entry into the medial colleges and engineering universities of the country. This debate has been started after a position holder flunked the entrance test and could not qualify for medical college. While it was a disappointment for that particular student who passed his intermediate examination with distinction but he wasn’t able to pass the entrance test which was based on the same syllabus of intermediate level.
The main argument against the entry test is that one cannot determine the knowledge gained by students in their twelve years of education in a three hour multiple choice based test, therefore the marks obtained by students in secondary and higher secondary education should be the criteria for entry into the professional educational institutions. But it should also be noted that our education system is not flawless. The examination system is based on ages old methodology. The prevailing system encourages cramming and pays no regards to the analytical approach. There is hardly any analytical question in exams or the questions which appeal to reason. Moreover the marking system is also flawed.
There is no set criterion for selection of examiners. These examiners are not paid high enough so they just try to mark maximum papers per day. One of the important points is the culture of cheating in the exams and students may get high marks just because of cheating. But on the other hand entry test is MCQs based test. Neither one cannot score high in this test through cramming nor through cheating. Only those candidates can score high who have cleared their concepts during their studies. So the concerned authorities need to give high weightage to the entry test score in finalizing merit for medical colleges and engineering universities. It will ensure the entry of deserving candidates into these educational institutions.
