ISLAMABAD:
In a programme aimed at promoting traditional skills of the country’s rich, diverse and pluralistic cultural tapestry, the National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa) has launched a ‘craft of the month’ programme for students and young children.

With the theme ‘Harnessing Culture with Education’, the programme will be held for seven days every month, during which the history and techniques of one unique craft will be promoted.

Students and faculty members from educational institutions are invited to participate.

Activates will include craft demonstrations by artisans; an education into a craft’s history via reading materials provided by artisans and Lok Virsa; learning craft techniques; and collaborating with artisans in their preparation. Students will also prepare write-ups on the month’s craft.

The programme focuses on creating a link between culture and education by having young people value the dignity of labour, own their culture, respect different professions.

The crafts to be highlighted include: truck art, pottery making, doll making, weaving, block printing, papier-mache, chunri making, stone carving, lacquer art and wax printing.

The programme will commence on September 7.
