Teachers ask for permanent posts, get spanked by police
Islamabad:
Capital police attacked female teachers who were protesting in front of the Parliament on Wednesday.
The women, from various federal government educational institutes, were dragged, beaten and their clothes were ripped apart as they attempted demand that their jobs be transformed from contract based positions to permanent spots.
The police arrested three of their representative Shama, Irum and Basit Iqbal Shaheen. However, they were later released when they shifted their sit-in on front of the national press club.
Miss Shama, the representative of teachers association, told Pakistan Today that more than a thousand honorary teachers, who were highly educated, had been teaching in 350 federal government education institutions of cant and garrison for more than two decades on nominal salaries. They could no longer work for the mere six thousand rupees that their contacts were fetching them.
The PPP government made the contract to appoint them on a permanent basis but the present government is not following the suit and cancelled the previous order. “For our right to be appointed permanently we the teacher union went in court against the present government decision where we won the case but the government is still reluctant to issued order to make us permanent government employees,” she said.
Moreover, on court order the government created a committee to decide the matter but the decision of government made committee is yet to come. She added that the teachers would not move an inch to end the sit-in unless their demands were met i.e. to make all teachers permanent as soon as possible. As per educational capabilities the teachers should be promoted to their due grade and lastly as per the services and age the government should return our dues.
