Sindh cabinet undergoes strategic reshuffle
Piqued by strong attacks on poor governance the PPP-led Sindh government has finally decided to effect changes in the set-up. The development came in line with Tuesday's high profile meeting Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah held with party co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari in Dubai.
Also attended by cabinet members Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sharjeel Inam Memon and Mukesh Kumar Chawla, the meeting's agenda was, reportedly, focused on the proceedings of and decisions made by last apex committee meeting at the Chief Minister House. While the PPP top leadership is staying abroad ever since Zardari's uncalled for tirade against the country's military leadership, it has been unclear who is calling the shots when it comes to taking administrative decisions in the provincial affairs.
Sources said top hierarchy of the PPP is facing severe criticism by party workers. The PPP leadership decided to remove in the first phase all powerful bureaucrats including Manzooor Qadir, Nisar Moorai and Saqib Somroo. Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh Minister for local bodies had been accused of patronising water hydrants mafia that resulted in severe shortage of water in the city. Unethical videos of the Sindh Minister for Education Nisar Ahmad Khuhro have also gone viral on social media that has received severe criticism from the different segments of the society. Moreover, Education Department has emerged one the most corrupt departments in the Sindh government where the officials earned millions of rupees of "illegal gratifications" for awarding undue promotions and recruitments, incurring grave financial losses to the national exchequer.
The poor performance of ministers has prompted the Co-Chairman of PPP Asif Zardari and Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah to reshuffle the Sindh Cabinet. Many hope that reshuffling in cabinet and bureaucracy would prove better service delivery to the masses. Taking the stock of the worsening situation, sources said, PPP leadership had given a go-ahead for a reshuffle of the portfolios of powerful PPP ministers in the Sindh cabinet in order to create an impression of accountability in the provincial PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would himself monitor the performance of a reshuffled cabinet.
According to sources privy to the development, the PPP meeting in Dubai opposed any idea of removing anyone from the provincial cabinet. According to the decisions taken during the meeting, the portfolios of Sharjeel Inam Memon, Mir Hazar Khan Bijrani, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Nasir Hussain Shah and Mukesh Kumar Chawla would be reshuffled.
They said that the portfolios of Local Bodies and Information would be taken from Sharjeel Inam Memon and he would be given the ministry of works and services department. The Local Bodies would be given to Nasir Shah, who is the parliamentary secretary of forest, environment and wildlife. The portfolio of education department would be taken from Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and he would be given the ministry of Information department and irrigation while the education department would be given to Mir Haszar Khan Bajrani, taking the portfolio of Works and Services from him.
Moreover, the Information Technology minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla would be given the additional charge of Public Health Engineering andRural Development. The sources revealed that a decision had been taken in this regard from the top PPP leadership and notification of these changes are issued on late Wednesday night.
