Expert stresses investment for national prosperity
BAHAWALPUR
Saying that Pakistan has improved in global competitiveness while India is moving down, Dr Muhammad Mukhtar, former vice chancellor of three universities, urged the government to pay attention to increase investments in the country.
He said that that three major factors contribute towards well-being and prosperity of nations are: 1. Economies that consistently rank high in the competitiveness rankings are those that are able to develop, attract and retain talent, and constantly introduce new and higher value-added products and services into the market; 2. Strong public and private leadership, a clear vision and effective and ongoing communication to build trust between all parties; 3. High-quality job creation and sustained prosperity.
He said that the key findings are linked with higher education institutes of any nation. Recollecting his memories as vice chancellor of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, he mentioned strong public private rather inter-institutional partnership in the form of establishing Ranger Campus of the University, attracting and retaining the talented individuals and rewarding them with research incentives and providing high quality value added products like the approval of cotton variety IUB 222 made the Islamia University of Bahawalpur as top ranked university of Southern Punjab.
He noted Pakistan Council for Science and Technology ranked the institution second best in the country after University of Agriculture Faisalabad in science and technology out of the over 60 higher education institutes. Furthermore, the Inter University Consortium for the Promotion of Social Science Arts and Humanities, Islamia University of Bahawalpur is a glaring example of reaping the benefits of joint efforts, he said. He also urged Pakistani universities to make collaborative efforts in various science and technology sectors either establishing consortia or joint efforts toward generating value-added products within the country. Every year the “World Economic Forum” releases report relevant to productivity and prosperity of nations called “The Global Competitiveness Report”. This year (2014-2015), the report comprises data from 144 countries of the world relevant to their economic performances. According to the report Switzerland and Singapore maintained their previous 1st and 2nd positions respectively, whereas, United States of America jumped from its previous 5th to 3rd position with a positive trend. Pakistan climbed from its previous 133rd position to 129th; whereas neighbouring India dropped from its previous 60th to 71st position. However, future declining trends in Pakistani global competitiveness should be worrisome for the government and lawmakers and they should put efforts to divert it with a healthy trends and outcomes.
Among the Muslim world, the United Arab Emirates became a leader in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region by improving its ranking from previous 19th to 12th. Glaring institutional reforms in the United Arab Emirates mainly in the higher education, incorporation of information communication technology and macroeconomic stability show a highly positive trend in the global competitiveness of the nation.
