The Class Divide

Pakistan has many social problems however one of the main problems that it is facing is the class division and language barrier, where the main focus is on learning English and the ones who know this language are at better advantage of getting jobs and admission in universities. Majority of the people who have their education in Urdu are left unemployed even if their knowledge and understanding is more than anyone. People in our country need to understand that the word ‘education’ does not mean knowing English; it has much more to it. Learning and educating is important whether it is in any language. Language is just a medium to get educated.

One way to overcome this is to make the standard of education same throughout the country in schools and colleges and the medium to be in Urdu or if it has to be English then it should be same for all schools as well. Though many government schools are changing their curriculum to English these days, can we actually progress as a nation if we downgrade our own national language? How will other nations respect our language when we ourselves don’t respect it?

No one in Japan, China and Germany speaks English but it’s pretty evident how they are prospering even without such divides. I am not against English; I am just against the class divides we have created due to such problems. Learning any language is good whether its English or any other but prioritizing it will lead us nowhere.

Effort has to be made in order to overcome this problem. Even If we prioritize Urdu, our job here is not done. Books need to be translated in Urdu so if a person who wants to be a doctor he/she is not restraint from seeking education. Basic subjects like Math and Sciences can easily be taught in Urdu. Most universities in Pakistan prefer students who speak fluent English; people who have received education in English feel they are superior to the Urdu speaking people, which leads to an inferiority complex among them. This needs to stop.

If we talk about how this started, it was during the British era that English was the main focus. People who knew English could easily meet and deal with the British and very quickly English gained prominence as a language.

Education should have no language barriers. Learning and education should be the same and equal rights for everyone. Once the class divide between English and Urdu will stop, it will lead to a more progressive society. People will focus on learning rather than just language and more people will have opportunities to contribute to our country, Pakistan.
