Advanced learning : Higher education finally gets due attention

PESHAWAR:
As there are not many institutions that offer higher education in the provincial capital, Hasnain Sharif Shaheed Government Higher Secondary School No1 has decided to start offering classes for FSc so that students are not limited to a high school qualification.
According to the school administration, the last date to submit admission forms
is July 31 and these can bought from the campus for Rs20.
After all the forms have been submitted, the merit list will be released on August 3 while interviews of those who have applied for medical studies will be conducted on August 4. Engineering candidates will have their interviews on August 5.
Talking to The Express Tribune on Tuesday, Peshawar District Education Officer Sharif Gul said this is the first time classes for medical and engineering programmes will take place at the school.
He added classes for FA have already started in the school and classes for the science group will also be held from the upcoming
academic year.
Since there are not many government colleges in the district, said Gul, students prefer to opt for private colleges. He added the initiative to introduce FSc classes in higher secondary schools has been taken to reduce the burden on other colleges.
He said there are 21 higher secondary schools in Peshawar out of which only half have started offering FA/FSc classes.
Gul said there was a time when there was no facility of higher education at schools which meant students had to travel long distances to other institutions that offered higher education programmes.
This also forced students from low income backgrounds to do without an education as they could not afford the fees of private colleges.
However, the DEO said now FSc classes have started and the necessary teachers have been hired at government schools.
He added classes have also started in 25% of girls’ higher secondary schools and the government is planning to extend the facility to all higher secondary institutions so that the ratio of education can increase for both boys and girls.
