Plan Int’l welcomes
commission
ISLAMABAD (PR): Child rights organisation Plan International has welcomed the announcement of a high-level Commission on the Financing of Global Education Opportunities, announced at the Oslo Summit on Education.
The Commission, to be chaired by UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown, will champion investment in education worldwide.
It will seek money to cover huge the huge shortfall in the financing of global education, and identify ways to deploy currently available resources more effectively.
It is estimated that a total of US$39 billion is needed annually if the world is to achieve the proposed Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030.
“World leaders must act now to make financial commitments to bridge the huge financing gap for education.
We cannot miss the chance to transform the futures of millions of children through education.
The Financing for Development negotiation in Addis next week will be the first test for world leaders to put these fine words into action” said Jonathan Mitchell, Plan International’s Director of International Programmes.
A statement issued at the Oslo Summit also highlighted that education must be available for all and the cost of that factored into national education budgets.
Rashid Javed, Country Director from Plan International Pakistan, who participated in the summit, said: “Donor and other sources of funding for education need to be matched by domestic commitments.
In Pakistan, for example, the government only currently spends 2% of its GDP on education, this needs to change.
” Plan International has urged the Commission to build on the momentum generated by the Oslo Summit to ensure that the declaration is translated into action.
The organisation has also advocated that efforts for financing global education should also extend to conflict and humanitarian settings where it is sorely needed.
It has welcomed the work of the Champions’ Group on Education in Emergencies and Protracted Crisesas a step in the right direction.
Hundreds of thousands of children and youth are out of school globally due to conflicts, disasters, disasters and epidemics.
Neglecting their right to education will undermine their future and future of their societies.
“I hope this Summit will bring about total and lasting change so that every child can receive equal access to education without segregation or discrimination.
We are tired of being left behind, and it is time that world leaders take concrete action to ensure that every child has equal access to quality education.
” said Henry Garneo, Chairman of Liberia’s National Children and Youth Advisory Board, who is part of Plan International’s Global Voice for Change project.
Plan International is calling on governments to undertake a review of education sector plans, budgets, curricula and textbooks in order to ensure teaching materials, methods, and learning environments are gender-sensitive, and promote equality, non-discrimination and human rights.
“Planning around allocating resources needs to focus on building the right conditions for girls to thrive in education.
A holistic
approach is needed to address the barriers that exist within and outside of the classroom,” Mitchell added.
