Bin textbooks by 2020 & go digital, schools urged
Textbooks should be scrapped in British schools within the next five years, according to a top education advisor to US President Barack Obama, Daily Mail reports.
Richard Culatta, of the US Department for Education, said the many digital resources available will soon make textbooks obsolete.
He said that while textbooks are outdated as soon as they are printed, apps and websites can be constantly updated. Digital resources also suit pupils who do not want to learn in a 'linear' fashion and can help partially-sighted pupils who need bigger text. The US expert's intervention comes after Schools Minister Nick Gibb warned that an 'anti-textbook' culture in English schools was leaving pupils lagging behind peers in top performing nations. Gibb said last year that working from textbooks can give pupils a more structured education, save schools money and help parents support their sons and daughters outside school.
Government-backed research has suggested schools in countries with the best exam results use textbooks more than schools here. But a number of schools in England are already using iPads and computers in an increasing number of classes.
Speaking at an Education Reform summit in Westminster, Culatta said he hoped UK schools would ditch textbooks as soon as possible. He said, "Learning is fun but we make it boring. Textbooks are outdated, they are in a format that it's not adaptable and for students learning in other languages, they can't press the word and get a definition. If I am struggling to see, I can't zoom in. They are not accessible, they are in a format that can be updated or modified by teachers, which is important. Teachers know what they need and they need formats that adapt and they can't do that if it's in a traditional textbook." Culatta, who is the director of the US Office of Educational Technology, said it was easier to get pupils to 'engage' with interactive digital resources.
