CM orders short-, medium-, long-term plans to improve traffic system
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that traffic system is the identity of a civilized society.
He said that an effective traffic system is essential for providing better facilities to the citizens and resolving traffic problems and better management can help in this regard. He said that there is a need for modernizing traffic system in Lahore and other big cities of Punjab. He said that Punjab government is introducing effective reforms in traffic system for the benefit of people which will rid them of traffic problems and improve the flow of traffic.
He was addressing a meeting through video link in Civil Secretariat on Thursday, which reviewed in detail the recommendations with regard to improvement and reforms in traffic system. The Chief Minister said that all concerned departments will have to work with effective coordination for improvement of traffic system. He said that there is a need for effective management of roads and traffic. He said that bringing all concerned departments under one roof regarding traffic should be considered and recommendations should be submitted in this regard as soon as possible.
The Chief Minister directed that short, medium and long term plans be evolved for reforms and re-engineering in the system of traffic. He said that in order to rid the people of traffic problems, such a programme should be evolved the implementation of which could help resolve traffic problems in the real sense. The Chief Minister directed that immediate measures should be taken for adopting on-camera traffic challan system and a practicable pilot project should be prepared for keeping motorcycles in one lane. He directed that steering committee should review all recommendations and present final proposals within three weeks.
Salman Sufi of special monitoring unit of Chief Minister Office gave detailed briefing regarding improvement in traffic system. The meeting reviewed various proposals in this regard. Provincial Ministers Col. Retd. Shuja Khanzada, Mujtaba Shuja ur Rehman, Chairman Lahore Transport Company Khawaja Ahmed Hassan, Special Assistant Rana Maqbool, Inspector General Police, secretaries of concerned departments, Commissioner Lahore division and senior officers attended the meeting.
Education expert of Sweden Odd Eiken met Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday. Matters regarding promotion of quality education, information technology and training of teachers on modern lines were discussed in the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that the promotion of quality education is the top priority of Punjab government and revolutionary reforms have been introduced for the improvement of education sector. He said that targets have been fixed with regard to quality education under Parho Punjab, Barho Punjab programme while missing facilities are being provided in schools on priority basis.
Shahbaz Sharif said that state of the art Daanish schools have been set up in south Punjab and far flung areas of the province. He said that quality education is being provided to children of poorest families in these schools. He said that education is imparted through smart boards in these schools. He said that Punjab Educational Endowment fund has been established in the province for helping low income boy and girl students to continue their studies and the volume of the fund has been reached up to more than Rs. 15 billion. He said that more than one lakh deserving but talented boy and girl students are being provided higher education through Punjab Educational Endowment Fund.
He said that IT labs have also been set up in schools. Education expert of Sweden Odd Eiken appreciated the standard of education in schools in Punjab and said that cooperation assured cooperation for the promotion of quality education and training of teachers. Provincial Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed, Chairman TEVTA, Secretary Schools Education and concerned authorities were present in the meeting.
Shahbaz Sharif has said that smart monitoring of 53 thousand government schools of the province and provision of access to people to the data is a revolutionary step of Punjab government. He said that making data of schools public is a glorious example of transparency and self-accountability in the history of the country. He said that this revolutionary step will help in the promotion of Parho Punjab—Barho Punjab programme. He said that Pakistan Muslim League-N government has presented the biggest department of the province in the court of the people and the masses should monitor government schools to make Punjab a role model province with regard to promotion of quality education.
