A deputy director of the education department is under preventive custody of the Rangers for three months, the paramilitary force’s law officer informed the Sindh High Court on Tuesday.
The Rangers law officer disclosed this in a report in response to the court’s notice to explain the whereabouts of the deputy director, Muhammad Irfan, whose family had accused the law enforcers of illegally detaining him.
Farhat Irfan, a resident of Garden, had gone to court seeking the whereabouts of her husband. She alleged that Rangers personnel had barged into her apartment on the morning of May 21, taking her husband with them. She said the officials had told her that Irfan was being taken away for security clearance and would be released in a few hours, but he was neither set free nor were his whereabouts revealed.
The petitioner had sought a direction for the police to register a criminal case against the Rangers for illegally detaining her husband and the production of the detainee in court.
On Tuesday, a report was filed on behalf of the Rangers’ Abdullah Shah Ghazi station commander, stating that Irfan had been ordered to be detained in prison for 90 days under Section 11EEEE of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. A division bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, took the report on record and adjourned the hearing.
