PM vows to increase education budget in an Arab newspaper column

WEB DESK: The Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has written a column highlighting the importance of school education in an Arab newspaper.
The column which appeared in Arab News states that 6 million children in Pakistan remain out of school. Independent figures put the estimated figure at 25million out of school children.
The PM in his column said that among the plethora of problem that affects education in Pakistan terrorism tops the list.
“Perhaps worst of all, terrorists and extremists have been targeting schools, blowing up their buildings and threatening their teachers, particularly in the northern part of the country. In a particularly tragic incident last December, terrorists attacked young students and teachers at a school in Peshawar,” he wrote.
“Protecting schools from extremists today will help to stem the rise of extremism tomorrow.”
He added that he had placed education in Pakistan on a very high national agenda.
Education makes two percent of the annual budget in Pakistan. Educationists and civil society bodies have been campaigning to get the budget increased to at least 4 percent.
In his column he promises to increase the education budget to four percent. “My government has committed to increase the public resources allocated for education, which averaged only 2.4 percent of GDP from 2004 to 2013, to 4percent of GDP over the next three years.”
