Int’l Child Labour day observed
HYDERABAD: The situation of child labor in Pakistan is on upward trajectory and posing pressure to the health and education to deserving children.
According to an official of Society for Protection of Rights of Child (SPARC), Kashif Bajeer there were more than 1.7 million bonded laborers working alone in agriculture sector.
Talking to APP on the occasion of International Day for Child Labour being observed on Friday, Bajeer further said that according to a survey conducted last year, there were 3.3 million child laborers in the country.
The Day being observed to creat awareness on child labour at global level.
This year's theme for the World Day against Child Labour is "NO to child labour, YES to quality education!"
He said that Pakistan, like many other countries is the signatory to Universal Human Rights resolution and of ILO conventions but the plight of child labour is regrettable.
He said that the children of laborers are deprived of education, health and hygiene.
He claimed that they were not entitled to CNICs, birth registrations certificates and their names are not even included in the new voter list.
He appealed to the government to come up with a programme that recognizes the rights of the child and also protects children from harm. He appreciated the role of media and said that they raising this issue at local and national level, however there is need of more efforts so that the bonded related laws could be implemented effectively.
