Pakistani Teacher Selected for ASCD’s 2015 Emerging Leader Class

ASCD, a global community dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching, and leading, has selected Umair Qureshi—currently a teacher at Beaconhouse School System Margalla Campus—for its 2015 class of Emerging Leaders. The Emerging Leaders program recognizes and prepares young, promising educators to influence education programs, policy, and practice on both the local and national levels.
This year’s 46 selected leaders were invited to apply for the competitive program based on self-nominations as well as recommendations made by past program participants, current ASCD members, and the greater education community.
“It is my pleasure to be the first to congratulate ASCD’s 2015 class of Emerging Leaders,” said Judy Seltz, ASCD executive director. “This is an impressive group of committed educators who have applied their craft in all areas of education, demonstrated strong results in diverse learning environments, and shown a commitment to leadership in the field. I know they will take full advantage of the opportunities the Emerging Leaders program offers, and ASCD looks forward to supporting their continued growth.”
All Emerging Leaders are enrolled in the program for two years and will help to advance ASCD’s positions and values; participate in shaping education policy and advocating for the whole child; and explore multiple ASCD leadership pathways. Throughout the program, Emerging Leaders will have the opportunity to serve on ASCD committees, host networking events for educators, and contribute to ASCD publications such as Educational Leadership® magazine and the Inservice blog.
The 2015 Emerging Leader class is the largest since the program’s inception in 2005 and is diverse both professionally and regionally. Like ASCD’s membership, the 2015 class is made up of a diverse group of educators. The class includes educators from 21 states, Indonesia, and Pakistan who hold a variety of roles, including principal, teacher, consultant, curriculum director, and administrator.
Educators selected for the Emerging Leaders program have been in the education profession for 5 to 15 years; demonstrate a passion for teaching, learning, and leadership; exhibit a broad range of diversity in position, location, cultural background, and perspective; hold promise as leaders; and are committed to ASCD’s beliefs and to pursuing leadership opportunities.
