VU’s faulty system fines thousands of students
LAHORE: A fault in the system of Virtual University led to a fine to thousands of students who are making their date sheets for Spring 2015 Midterm Examination, Daily Times learnt on Thursday.
VU’s education system allow its students to make their own date sheet online through which students can select the venue, subject, date and timing of their subjects as they wanted. According to the VU’s datesheet web page, students who will not make their date sheets before June 5 would be fined Rs 500 per students. But a fault in the system didn’t allowed thousands of VU’s students to make their date sheets when they selected the timings for subjects, a pop up window appeared informing them that their sign up date has been expired and they have to pay Rs 500 for signing up late.
Meanwhile a voucher of Rs 500 has also been uploaded in the Learning Management System (LMS) of VU students with due date of June 4. It is pertinent to mention here that VU is an online education university providing education to more than 30 thousands students across Pakistan. On the other hand, a lot of students have also complained that VU staff neither receiving their phone calls nor they are replying to their emails regarding this faulty date sheet system. They have demanded Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC), Rector VU and other concerned authorities to take notice of the matter do not mint money from students through their faulty system.
Students also informed that fault in VU’s online system is not a new thing as they are already facing a lot of issues. A student seeking anonymity told Daily Times that this issue was not a new as VU’s faulty systems and policies are forcing students to pay more and more money without any special reason. He told that besides minting money, VU students also facing several problems due to unresponsive behavior of VU’s staff. I was shocked when I read the pop up message informing that I have to pay Rs 500 for signing up after expiry date even the VU’s own date sheet web page was claiming the date of June 5, he added.
Another student said that VU’s high ups must took notice of this negligence of VU staff whose mistake has created panic among thousands students across Pakistan. He said that HEC’s check and balance is seemed to be zero as no one is taking notice of the issues being faced by students of VU. He was of the view that VU must update its systems, software and hire some competent staff which would have passion for serving students rather than getting salaries. Registrar VU Masood Elahi Babar was not available for his comments despite several attempts.
