KP government disburses Rs 85.2 million under unemployment stipend
The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has disbursed an amount of Rs 85.20 million as monthly stipend for unemployed youth under the Chief Minister's special initiative. For the mitigation of the financial hardships of the educated youth the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has initiated a special stipend scheme. Under the scheme, the educated youth is getting Rs 2000/- per month as allowance.
The scheme was introduced in the provincial budget for financial year 2013-14 and under the phase-I an amount of Rs 500 million has been released during last financial year while the implementation mechanism has also been approved. The provincial cabinet has also approved it.
Under the scheme, students of universities and madaris, with 60% marks in annual system and (3.0 GPA) 70% in semester system will benefit. During last financial year, the provincial government received and scrutinised 5217 applications out of which 3720 were found eligible. Out of 3720 eligible candidates 3550 had already received the stipend while under the second phase 5706 candidates had applied out of which 2538 have been declared eligible while payment of stipend is in progress.
The provincial government has also established Rs 500 million Chief Minister's Education Endowment Fund and Rs 300 million Higher Education Endowment Fund to improve higher education through provision of scholarships to the university students covering their admission fee, tuition fee, lab, library and mess charges and monthly stipend of Rs 5000/-.
For this purpose, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Endowment Fund Act, 2014 has been promulgated, Board of Directors and Scholarship Management Committee has been notified while the seed money of Rs 500 million has been invested in the Bank of Khyber @10.25% profit. According to criteria students admitted to universities after June 2013 are eligible for the scholarship, awarded in collaboration with the approved institutions through memorandum of understanding. The students apply directly to the institutions. The scholarship is disbursed to the institutions directly on semester basis.
The objective of the second Rs 300 million Higher Education Endowment Fund of Rs 300 million is to assist and encourage students at college level. The scheme will benefit BS students of public sector colleges and top eight students per college per discipline on the basis of marks in 1st semester will be selected for the payment of stipend of Rs 1500/- per month. After the release of the fund, the scheme has been launched formally.
