1 | Most of the islands are pieces of rising ground which were separated from the mainland by the drowning of the lower land which surrounded it. They lie close to the continents and are separated from them only by shallow seas. Smaller islands, however, such as St. Helena, the Azores, etc., lie far from the continents and do not equal them in their build. Some of them are built of volcanic rock and are due to volcanic outburst from the ocean floor. The volcanic cone grows tall and taller, until its summit rises above the waves. The Hawaiian group is an example. It still has active volcanoes. The oceanic islands which are into volcanoes, are built up of coral and coral sand. |
