Ocean and Seas (2) Add new question

Question

Q: what do you know about world oceans and seas?

Option Answer Is Correct
1 In the deep hollows of the earth’s crust lie the oceans. They cover three-quarters of the surface of the globe. In some places the low-lying edges of the deep oceans there are stretches of shallow water. The oceans form one connected expanse of water, although we have divided them for convenience into different parts such as the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean etc. The bottom of the oceans consists of the most part of monotonous, nearly level plain; diversified in places by long ridges and occasional isolated peaks rising nearly or quitter to the surface. In the latter case, they form oceanic islands. Running waters, wind and moving ice, which play so large a part in sculpturing the land surfaces, cannot attack the surface floor. The sinking down of the portions of the crust, the outbreak of the volcanoes, etc. account for the chief submarine ridges and deeps.
2 In shallow water, down to about 100 fathoms, the sea floor consists of sand, gravel and mud, the composition of which depends on that of the neighboring land, as these deposits are the result of denudation of the land by rain and rivers and the direct action of the sea on the coast. Large rivers deposit enormous quantities of very fine mud over areas es tending, in some cases, hundreds of miles from their mouths. This mud is generally of slaty-blue colour, but green and red mud are also found.
3 Troughs are regions where the ocean is very deep. The most famous troughs or deeps include the Japan or Tuscarora Deep and the Challenger Deep in the West Pacific. Ocean Currents are, so to say, rivers of warm or cold water, flowing in an ocean. Just as a motion of the air is due to difference in atmospheric pressure at different places, movements of the ocean water are similarly due to the difference in temperature of water. When any body of water is heated in one place and cooled in another, differences of density are produced which set up convection currents, as for example, if you heat water in a pot from below, the water will begin to move in upward and downward currents. In the oceans there is a slow general circulation due to the settling of cold, dense water to the bottom in the polar seas. The cold water flows along the bottom towards the Equator, where it slowly rises getting warm at the surface and flowing again towards the poles. Thus even the deepest parts of the oceans are to stagnant.
