Awareness about sex education
KECH: Sex education has become quite common around the globe and is being taught in some government institutions in Pakistan. Teachers in the villages outside Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Johi and other rural areas, are supporting the project to impart sex education. The course will help girls understand their rights and, potentially, save themselves from cases of violence. One ten-year-old girl claimed that now, if someone misbehaves with her, she will have the courage to take on a defensive role and stand up for herself.
Some individuals might have inhibitions discussing the subject, but it is important for everyone to be aware of it.
Nearly 7,000 books about sex education are sold each year, but they are often not available in girls’ schools. Some teachers have also ignored sex education because it is still considered a taboo topic in Pakistan. Because of this ideology, many girls are deprived of learning about their basic rights. On a daily basis, girls are raped, kidnapped and assaulted. The government can help mitigate women’s powerlessness and instead seek to empower women — and young men — by implementing sex education in every school of Pakistan.
