CO-EDUCATION IN PAKISTAN
Co education remained controversial issue in Pakistan. In Educational institutions of Pakistan there are two types of thoughts for Co-education; one type is in the favour of Co education while the other one is not. The institutions which favour Co-education system say that this system is very useful. They give many arguments in support of their views. Their main argument is that in a poor and backward country like Pakistan it is impossible to maintain separate institutions for boys and girls so this system should be accepted and adopted by every institution. They also say that Co education provides an opportunity for young men and women to understand each other, this would be helpful for them in their future life. It will also be good for the progress of the country and would raise the standard of education because it will promote competition among boys and girls.
On the other hand the disadvantages of Co-education appear clearly in several colleges and universities. The real reason why some people support co education is that they like western culture, they want to get modernized according to western civilization. But we have to consider whether our religion, our culture, society and our circumstances allow us to adopt Co-education or not? I can say that they certainly do not allow us to adopt such system. If Co-education is inevitable, it should only be adopted at the primary and post-graduation level. And there is no reason that we should adopt and patronize everything having foreign name.
