Night SleepSkipping a night of sleep could do more than make you tired and cranky: it could be damaging your brain. Swedish researchers tested the blood of 15 healthy men after eight hours of sleep and then again after a night with no sleep. They found that the levels of proteins linked to brain injuries increased by 20% after an all-nighter compared to after a full night’s sleep. These findings are consistent with previous research showing that the brain uses sleep to flush harmful toxins out of the brain. While the researchers don’t suggest that skipping a night’s sleep is as harmful as a concussion, the results do suggest that missing sleep can harm your brain — at least in the short term.
